AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS FOR

DIABETES

‘Prameha’ is a syndrome described in ancient Ayurvedic texts that includes clinical conditions involved in obesity, prediabetes, diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome. It refers to metabolic disorders caused by ‘Dhatuagni’ dysfunction. In the present scenario, ‘Apathyanimittaja Prameha’ (acquired) is more prevalent than ‘Sahaja Prameha’ (genetic) . According to Ayurveda, ‘Apathyaahara’ and ‘Vihara’ (improper diet and regimen) lead to ‘Dhatuagnimandya’ which results in Prameha. Twenty types of Pramehas are explained in Ayurveda depending on their chronicity. Out of this, 10 are due to ‘Kapha dosha’ (early stage), 6 are due to ‘Pitta dosha’ (acute stage), and 4 are due to ‘Vata dosha’ (chronic stage).

Holisitic Treatments

Physical factors include hormonal variation, old age, sleeplessness, chronic constipation, Srodhorodha, and metabolic disorders. Due to this etiology, the vata will get vitiated and affect the rakta, with the other two doshas causing hypertension.

There are two methods for managing hypertension. One is a preventive approach in which life-style modification is done through Nidanaparivarjana ahara and vihara. On the long run, it may cause Hypertension, degenerative disorders, diabetes, cardiac issues, acidity, cholesterol, depression, etc.

Ayurvedic treatment aims at correction of dietary patterns in the form of nidanaparivarjana, pathya aharavihara, apatarpana chikitsa, etc., to correct vitiated dosha and agni. If this condition is left untreated, it can progress to an advanced stage, which causes wear and tear on joints.

The acute stage of OA is easily manageable with Ayurvedic therapies. In the chronic stage, periodic check-up’s and specific therapies are indicated, which help prevent further progression of the disease. RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

RA, or Amavata is a chronic inflammatory joint disease. Amavata is a kapha vataja vyadhi affecting all joints. It is caused by the degeneration of agni, which results in the production of ama (toxins), and this ama gets circulated all over the body by means of vitiated vata and gets dislodged in kapha sthana (amasaya, sandhi, etc.), starting with pain, swelling, and stiffness of small and big joints. Prolonged arthritic conditions can even cause deformity of joints.

Ayurveda has certain effective ways to cure this condition. The first step is normalising the impaired agni by using langhana (alpabhojana), deepana, and pachana dravyas, and later detoxification is done with ayurvedic panchakarma procedures like vasti and virechana, which eliminate amatva from the body.
